After forty years of swinging a spray gun and pulling dents across Mid Devon, I’ve come to recognise the rhythm of the seasons. While everyone else is looking forward to the lighter evenings and the blossom in the Exe Valley, I’m usually looking at the tell-tale signs of a Devon spring on people's bodywork. It’s a busy time of year for us at DentDash, and for good reason.
The transition from winter to spring is particularly tough on our cars. Between the 'pothole season' caused by the winter frosts and the sudden surge in hedge growth along the lanes near Bampton and Witheridge, your car takes a fair bit of punishment. Here is what I’m seeing most often on the driveway right now, and how we get it sorted without you needing to lose your car to a body shop for a week.
1. Pothole Season and Alloy Wheel Scuffs
It’s no secret that our Devon roads take a beating in the winter. The freeze-thaw cycle opens up cracks, and by the time March rolls around, some of the lanes around Crediton can feel more like an obstacle course. While a deep pothole can track your steering out, more often than not, it’s the sudden swerve to avoid one—or being forced into a kerb by an oncoming tractor—that does the damage.
I spend a lot of my time in the spring on alloy wheel restoration. When you kerb a wheel, it doesn't just look unsightly; it can lead to corrosion if the lacquer is breached. 2. The 'Green Tunnel' and Paintwork Scratches
As the weather warms up, the Devon hedges start their spring growth spurt. While it makes the countryside look lush, it narrows the lanes significantly. If you’re driving between Tiverton and South Molton, you’ll know the sound of thorns scraping along the passenger side all too well.
Most of these are what we call 'clear coat' scratches—they haven't gone through to the primer, but they’ve dulled the finish and left white streaks. This is where paint correction comes in. Using professional machine polishers and the right compounds, I can often lift those hedge scratches right out, restoring that deep shine. 3. Loose Grit and Stone Chips
Spring is also the time for road maintenance. You’ll often find 'loose chippings' signs popping up as councils try to patch the winter damage. Those little stones are lethal for your bonnet and front bumper. They act like tiny hammers, chipping away at your paintwork. If left, these chips can lead to rust or peeling lacquer.
I always tell folks to get these seen to early. A quick touch-up and blend is much cheaper than having to respray an entire bonnet because the moisture has got under the paint and started a bigger problem.
4. The Shopping Centre Surge
With the better weather, everyone heads out to the garden centres and shops. More cars in the car parks means more door dings. Many people don't realise that for many small dings where the paint hasn't cracked, we can use Paintless Dent Removal (PDR). This is a skilled technique I’ve spent decades perfecting, massaging the metal back into shape from behind. It’s quick, it’s clean, and it keeps your original paint intact.
