Devon’s Narrow Lanes: Taming Summer Hedge Scratches and Bramble Rash

Summer in Devon means lush green lanes, but those overgrown hedges and hidden brambles can wreak havoc on your car's paintwork. Here is how to fix it.

There is nothing quite like a Devon summer. The sun is out, the valleys around Bampton are glowing, and our country lanes are at their most beautiful. But for a motorist, those lanes become a bit of a gauntlet this time of year. As the hedges grow out and the brambles start reaching across the tarmac, even a short trip to the shops can leave your car looking like it’s been through a thorn bush—because, quite literally, it has.

The Reality of 'Bramble Rash' in Mid Devon

Down here in the South West, we’re famous for our high banks and narrow passing places. During June and July, the vegetation grows at an incredible rate. You might be driving perfectly safely towards South Molton when a wide tractor or a delivery van comes the other way. You pull over as far as you can to be polite, and scritch—that’s the sound of the Devon hedge claiming another victim.

I’ve spent 40 years looking at paintwork, and I can tell you that summer hedge scratches (often called 'bramble rash') are unique. They usually run the entire length of the passenger side, often appearing as multiple fine white lines. While they look devastating, many of these are caught in the top layer of your car's lacquer.

Can You Just Polish Out Hedge Scratches?

I get asked this a lot while I’m out and about in Tiverton. The answer depends on the depth. If you run your fingernail across the scratch and it doesn't catch, we can usually fix it with professional paint correction. This involves using machine polishers and specific abrasives to level the clear coat and bring back that showroom shine.

However, Devon hedges aren't just made of soft leaves. They hide old fence posts, heavy stones, and thick woody stems. If the scratch has gone through the paint to the primer or metal, a simple polish won't cut it. In those cases, I’ll need to perform a car scratch repair, which involves precision paint matching and blending to ensure the repair is invisible. Typically, these repairs range from £80 to £250 depending on how many panels have been 'decorated' by the hedge.

Why Mobile Repair Makes Sense for Summer Scuffs

Nobody wants to lose their car to a body shop for three days in the middle of summer just because of a few scratches. That’s why I set up DentDash to be fully mobile. I come to your home or workplace, and most of the time, I can have those unsightly white lines gone in a few hours. Because I don't have the massive overheads of a town-centre garage, I’m usually 40% to 60% cheaper than a traditional body shop.

I also offer a collection and return service across Mid Devon. If you’re busy at work or just don't want the hassle, I’ll pick the car up, take it to my dedicated local unit, and bring it back looking like new. It’s a proper old-fashioned service with modern results.

Protecting Your Car This Season

While you can’t always avoid those narrow squeezes, keeping a good coat of wax or a ceramic sealant on your car can provide a sacrificial layer that takes the brunt of the light leafy contact. But for the heavy-duty brambles we have around here, sometimes a professional touch is the only way to get your pride and joy back to its best.

If your car has taken a beating from the Devon lanes recently, don't let those scratches sit there—they can eventually lead to paint oxidation or even rust if they're deep enough. Grab your phone and send me a couple of photos on WhatsApp at 07572 114436. I can usually give you a rough estimate from the pictures alone, often between £80 and £200 for typical lane damage.

You can also reach me through the DentDash WhatsApp link here. I’m out on the road Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, helping drivers across Tiverton, Exeter, and the surrounding villages keep their cars looking sharp despite our challenging roads.
