Paintless Dent Removal Explained — Is It Right for Your Car?

Paintless dent removal (PDR) is one of the most effective and affordable ways to fix car dents. Here's everything you need to know about how it works.

2 min read

Paintless dent removal — commonly known as PDR — is a specialist repair technique that removes dents from car body panels without the need for filler, sanding, or repainting. It's one of the most cost-effective and least invasive repair methods available, and it's a core part of DentDash's mobile dent removal service across Mid Devon.

How Does Paintless Dent Removal Work?

PDR uses specially designed metal rods and body picks to carefully push dented metal back to its original shape from behind the panel. The technician gains access to the back of the dent through existing gaps in the car's bodywork — through door openings, wheel arches, or behind trim panels.

Using a combination of leverage, pressure, and precise movements, the dent is gradually worked out from the inside. The metal's "memory" helps it return to its original shape. A trained technician can read the dent's pattern through reflections in the paint, using specialised lighting to achieve a perfect result.

What Dents Can PDR Fix?

PDR is suitable for many types of dents, provided the paint hasn't been broken:

  • Car park door dings — the most common candidate for PDR
  • Shopping trolley dents — small, round dents on doors and quarter panels
  • Hail damage — multiple shallow dents across the car's surface
  • Minor collision dents — small dents without paint damage
  • Bodyline dents — dents along the car's character lines (these require extra skill)

When PDR Isn't Suitable

PDR has its limitations. It's not the right approach for:

  • Dents where the paint has cracked, chipped, or flaked
  • Very sharp, creased dents where the metal has stretched significantly
  • Dents on panel edges where access from behind is impossible
  • Damage on aluminium panels (some techniques work, but it's more complex)
  • Very large dents where the metal has been severely deformed

In these cases, a traditional SMART repair with filler and respray is the better option — and DentDash provides both services.

Advantages of PDR

There are several compelling reasons to choose paintless dent removal:

  • Cost — PDR is typically 50–70% cheaper than conventional dent repair
  • Speed — most repairs are completed within 1–2 hours
  • Original paint preserved — no colour matching issues, no risk of paint peel
  • Value retention — a car repaired with PDR retains more value than one with repainted panels
  • Environmental — no paint, chemicals, or waste products
