Living and driving around the Mid Devon countryside, we put our cars through a lot. Between the narrow lanes of Bampton and the salt air that drifts across the hills, our vehicles take a beating. With MOT season always rolling around faster than we expect, most folks focus on the engine or the tyres. But in my 40 years at the tools, I’ve seen plenty of good cars fail on bodywork issues that could have been sorted in an afternoon.
While a few light scratches won't usually fail you, there are specific bodywork standards the DVSA looks for. If you've got an MOT coming up in Tiverton or the surrounding villages, here is my professional checklist to ensure your bodywork doesn't result in a 'Refusal to Issue a Certificate'.
1. Sharp Edges and 'Projections'
This is the big one. If you’ve had a knock in a car park or a run-in with a Devon hedge that’s left your bumper cracked or jagged, the examiner will fail it if they deem it a danger to pedestrians. A split plastic bumper with a sharp point sticking out is an immediate red flag. I often see this on bumper repairs where a driver has tried to 'patch it' with duct tape. Tape isn't a permanent fix, and an examiner won't accept it. We can usually weld those plastic splits and reshape the bumper for £120–£220, making it safe and smart again.
2. Structural Integrity and Corrosion
We see a lot of rain in Devon, and where there’s water, there’s eventually rust. For the MOT, the examiner checks for corrosion within 30cm of 'load-bearing' areas. This includes things like door pillars, sills, and suspension mounting points. While I specialise in cosmetic repairs, I always tell my customers: if you can poke a screwdriver through it, it’s a failure. Keeping your paintwork sealed and fixing deep stone chips through car scratch repair prevents that moisture from getting under the lacquer and starting the rot in the first place.
3. Mirrors and Visibility
Your wing mirrors are vital for navigating the tight spots in Crediton or Exeter. An MOT tester will check that your mirrors are secure and the glass isn't cracked in a way that obscures your view. If the housing is smashed but the mirror is still hanging on by a wire, that’s a fail. We can often repair the mirror casings and ensure everything is mounted solidly so you don't get caught out.
4. Body Panels and Doors
Do your doors open and close properly from both the inside and outside? They need to latch securely. Also, if you have a significant dent that has deformed the door frame or the bonnet latch mechanism, it’s a safety issue. Most minor dings are fine, but if a dent is interfering with the car's structural 'latch' points, it needs looking at. Our dent removal service can often massage these out without needing a full respray, keeping your costs down to between £80 and £200 per panel.
