5 Signs Your Lease Car Needs Professional Repairs Before Handover

Don't let the leasing company's inspectors catch you out. Learn the 5 signs your car needs professional repair to save you hundreds in penalties.

After 40 years in the trade, I’ve seen just about every trick in the book when it comes to lease return inspections. Many folks in Mid Devon, from the busy streets of Tiverton to the quiet lanes of Bampton, think their car looks 'fair enough' for its age. But 'fair enough' in your eyes and 'Fair Wear and Tear' in the eyes of a BVRLA inspector are two very different things.

Leasing companies make a tidy profit on the penalties they charge for damage. They aren't looking for a fair price to fix a scuff; they’re looking to charge you full dealership rates for a whole new panel. Here are five clear signs that you need to call in a professional before that inspector turns up on your driveway.

1. The 'Fingernail Test' on Body Scratches

Down here in Devon, our narrow lanes are notorious for 'Devon pinstriping'—those long scratches from overgrown hedges. If you’ve got a mark on your door or wing, try running your fingernail gently across it. If your nail catches in the groove, it’s too deep for a simple polish. These deep scratches will fail an inspection every time. Our car scratch repair service can usually sort these for £80–£250, which is a fraction of the penalty the finance company will slap on you.

2. Kerbed Alloy Wheels with Sharp Edges

We’ve all done it—tried to squeeze past a tractor in Crediton and caught the kerb. Most lease agreements allow for very minor scuffs (usually under 25mm), but if the metal is gouged, or the damage is on the 'diamond cut' face, they’ll likely charge you for a brand-new wheel. If your rims look chewed up, a professional alloy wheel restoration is essential. At £60–£180 per wheel, it’s much cheaper than the £400+ a manufacturer might charge for a replacement rim.

3. Bumper Scuffs and Plastic Transfers

Modern bumpers are designed to flex, but the paint on top isn't. If you’ve got 'spider-web' cracking in the paint or a scuff on the corner of the bumper from a tight car park, it’s a red flag. Inspectors look specifically for 'impact damage.' Even if it looks small to you, if the paint is broken or the plastic is deformed, you’ll be billed for a full bumper respray. I can usually perform a mobile bumper repair right on your drive for £120–£220, saving you a massive headache later.

4. Dings and Dents in the 'Swage Line'

A small ding in the middle of a flat panel might sometimes pass, but if you have a dent on a body line (the 'swage' or crease of the panel), it’s an automatic fail. These are harder to fix, and the leasing company knows it. Using specialized tools, I can often perform paintless dent removal to massage that metal back to its original shape for £80–£200, ensuring the car looks as good as the day you collected it.

5. Lack of 'Showroom Shine' (Dull Paintwork)

If you’ve taken the car through too many automated car washes, the paint might be covered in 'swirl marks' or look dull. When an inspector sees a car that hasn't been cared for, they look much closer for other faults. A professional paint correction can bring back that deep gloss. It shows the inspector the car has been looked after, which often makes them more lenient on the very minor bits of wear and tear.

Don't wait until the week before your lease ends. I recommend getting an appraisal done at least 4 weeks out so we have time to get you booked in and sorted. Because I’m mobile, I can come to your home or workplace across Mid Devon, and I’ll even collect and return the car if the job needs a bit more shelter than a driveway provides.

Want to avoid those nasty end-of-contract charges? Send me a few photos of your car on WhatsApp at 07572 114436. I’ll give you an honest appraisal and a fixed-price quote to get it ready for the inspector. You can also call me on the same number—I’m always happy to have a proper chat about your car.
